As a public health nurse, Phyllis Lane finds a way to help others
By: Rod Brown, The Sampson Independent

Lane explains the importance of staying current on shots to a patient
Most citizens think of a public servant as being a police officer or firefighter. To find others who serve the public, one only needs to look at the local Health Department.

Phyllis Avery Lane is a registered nurse and is a public health nurse II at the Sampson County Health Department, where she serves as is the immunization coordinator.

"Public health nursing is a wonderful career"

"Public health nursing is a wonderful career," Lane said. "I teach our community about prevention and the importance of immunization. I work with 11 other nurses who are outstanding professionals."

Lane worked for Sampson Regional Medical Center from 1983 until 1994 and then began working for the Sampson County Health Department. Her reason for changing jobs was to spend more time with her child.

She graduated from Clinton High School in 1981 and received her associate's degree in nursing at Sampson Community College

"I really didn't want to be a nurse," Lane said. "I wanted to be a dentist or a teacher."

She enrolled in the nursing program after her mother insisted that it would be a good career opportunity. Now that she has completed her schooling and has worked in the nursing field, she would have had it no other way.

"I love nursing," she said. "My position at the Health Department allows me to work with pregnant women and to teach about healthy pregnancy. I also teach children how to take care of their teeth. So I guess I am a teacher."

Lane could not see herself working in any other profession. Nursing allows her to meet people, teach them about healthy living, and even give tips about dental hygiene. More importantly, she enjoys working with the other professionals at the Sampson County Health Department.

"All of the nurses are outstanding," she said. "They are really concerned about people, and their health. I'm proud to be a part of the team."
