Pharmacy administrators run the business side of a pharmacy. They formulate budgets, develop business plans, manage workers, and run all aspects of pharmacy business. People working in this profession work in a variety of settings, including pharmacies, government agencies, health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, or at a university conducting health care research.

Pharmacy Administration Schools Offer Specialized Career Training

Becoming a pharmacy administrator starts with earning a bachelor's degree at a four-year university, and then attending a graduate program specializing in pharmacy administration to earn at least a master's degree. Some programs offer doctoral degrees in pharmacy administration, and people who earn this advanced degree often spend their career conducting research at a university. Typical classes offered at pharmacy administration schools include information technology (IT) in health care, statistics, drug development, management theory, and health outcomes research.

Pharmacy administration careers should be in high demand now and in the future due to the continual growth of the health care industry. No matter how health care changes in the future, sick people will consistently be prescribed medication that need to be filled at pharmacies, and administrators are needed to manage these businesses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that medical and health services managers earned a median annual wage of $81,850 in 2009.
