What Does Urology Nursing Entail?

Urology nurses typically work at hospitals or specialized urology clinics. First, a urology nurse helps a patient prevent urological symptoms and diseases through education. They counsel patients on how to prevent urinary tract infections and kidney stones with good hygiene and proper nutrition.

If a patient is already afflicted, urology nurses perform diagnostic testing, read lab results, and discuss treatment options. Often, patients need assistance with catheter care and exercises, and a urology nurse provides this help.

Finally, if the patient has an illness that needs repeated care, a urology nurse may coordinate follow-up treatments and home-care.

Education & Training Required to Work in Urology Nursing

There are no urology nursing degree programs, but you should take advantage of specialized training. First, you need to be a registered nurse. Once you pass the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse, there are just a few steps to specializing in urology nursing.

  1. Complete at least one full year in urology
  2. Acquire a Certified Urologic Registered Nurse (CURN) certification from the Certification Board for Urologic Nurses and Associates (CBUNA)
  3. Apply for a position

Most urology nurses participate in regular trainings to keep their licenses and knowledge up to date.

Typical Characteristics Required to Work in Urology Nursing

If there were an online degree program for bedside manners, a urology nurse would need it. To be happy in this specialty, you need to be happy working closely with patients. Urology nurses are rarely behind the curtain, but are instead the liaison between the patient and the doctor. Furthermore, urology is not a comfortable subject to discuss with strangers. A urology nurse must then be tactful and create an open environment in which a patient feels at ease.

High Demand for Urology Nursing Specialists

Thanks to advanced technology and new medicines, our society is living longer than ever before. When people age, their urological systems are often at risk. For this reason, urology nurses are in high demand. It is still a competitive market, though, so distinguish yourself with experience, continuing education, and certifications. If online degrees are not available, online courses are. Find them, and take advantage of any training that sets you apart from the rest.

As registered nurses, urology nurses can earn a comfortable salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for an RN in 2008 was $62,450.
