Community Health Nurses
practice in public health departments as well as in less structured settings and work directly with the public assisting individuals, groups and communities to achieve optimum
wellness through the delivery of public health nursing, preventive health care, and health education. Increasing complexity in health care and greater longevity have resulted in a growing need for
additional nurses to function in primary care delivery and prevention in community based settings. Community Health Nurses commonly administer vaccination programs, conduct cancer screening, perform
well-child examinations and healthy kid screenings, provide sexually transmitted disease education and counseling, HIV/AIDS counseling, education and testing, provide Tuberculosis screening and education,
conduct communicable disease investigations, conduct school health promotion and education programs, and a growing list of additional duties. Advanced Practice Community Health Nurses function at the local, state, national or international levels
in establishing community health policies, developing and administering public health programs, as well as in direct management and administrative roles for governments and private sector concerns.
