Any infectious agents or toxic
chemical could in theory be engineered for deliberate use as a
weapon. Experts in this field believe that anthrax, botulism,
plague, tularemia, and smallpox are the pathogens most likely to
be used. It is suspected that weaponized smallpox already
exists, and with advances in knowledge about the disease it is
suspected it may be simple to alter the virus code in such a way
that the disease, if used strategically, would blow past present
vaccinations. In most cases there will not be advance warning of
a biological attack, so the first indications will in most cases
be the patients you see in doctor's offices, public or school
health settings, or in your local emergency room. For this
reason nurses, physicians, paramedics and emt's need to become
extremely familiar with all aspects of medical management of
chemical or biological casualties.
